There’s two ways you can run your business: work IN your business or work ON your business. Far too often, entrepreneurs get caught in the trap of working IN their business. They take on a lot of the hats – finance, sales, creation, marketing, etc. and continue to wear them far beyond the point that they need too with no plan for transition or escape. The end result is 12 – 14 hour days and limited growth. Most entrepreneurs are not a jack of all trades…so even though they are getting stuff completed, it may not be of the potential or quality it could be by bringing someone amazing on board.

Why Do People Struggle With Hiring and Outsourcing?

There’s a few reasons. The first is a lack of organization. A good number of new business owners are “winging it”. They have a routine they developed to get tasks needed done but haven’t established any type of organization to their business. Creating an organization board or chart that lists the divisions and tasks is a great first step on getting clarity in what is needed to expand the business..

Second is cost. Most entrepreneurs think it’s going to cost an arm and a leg to hire good people to offload tasks to. Third, is a fear of “bad hires”. There’s a tremendous amount of confusion when it comes to how to hire, what to look for, what to ask, and what do to to ensure your new hire is ready to do a great job. The fear of wasting time, energy, and money with the wrong person can have a business owner avoid hiring all together. Fact is, without hiring good people, a business is limited and won’t expand.

Lastly, is overwhelm. Often, entrepreneurs are so overwhelmed with what they currently have to do that the idea of slowing down to interview, hire, and hat a new staff member add to the stress. The way to handle this is to make it a part of your daily or weekly routine. In reality, if you’re so overwhelmed you can’t hire then you really need to hire. Your resistance, fear or avoidance to hiring has led to the overwhelm and the solution is to start expansion of your organization to handle and increase your growth. If you make hiring a part of your standard operating basis, you’ll soon find yourself relieved of many of the time consuming tasks so you can focus on your zone of genius.

On your path to becoming a Virtual CEO…

Here’s a list of steps you can easily follow to become a Virtual CEO:

  1. Create a list of ALL the tasks required for the success of your business.
  2. Organize those tasks into Processes that can be followed by a new employee. For example, create a process for Social Media posting or Packaging and Shipping.
  3. Enroll in Virtual Staff Finder and begin the basic training on how to find excellent outsourced staff

At the beginning of 2015, I didn’t give a hoot about Twitter (gasp!). Quite frankly, it wasn’t even on my radar. I was knees deep in Facebook Ads, Instagram and direct traffic to promote my business. I wasn’t really sure what Twitter was or how one would use it to promote themselves or their business. It looked like a big waste of time to me.

That all changed when three things happened:

  1. Periscope was unleashed. I LOVE IT, use it, and promote with it. It’s directly connected to Twitter so I knew I needed to start building a following and learn it.
  2. Facebook shut down my ads account. Yes. It really did happen. After two nights of cold sweats, I decided I’d look at other social media platforms to get my lead gen back on track.
  3. I met Jennifer Lehner in Freedom Hackers Mastermind.

Jen’s not your typical “guru”.

She’s about the humblest person I’ve met. She’s not prone to bragging about her extraordinary skills on Twitter or her uncanny ability to know about the latest-greatest social media tool before anyone else does. That’s why I’m her biggest fan. JEN IS THE BOMB. Her Facebook Group, the Front Row, is an amazing community where you’ll learn about everything that’s new in digital marketing.

I spotted a post from Jen online and asked her if she would show me Periscope. We had never met and at that point weren’t even “friends”. Still, she said YES! The next day, we spent an hour on Skype and she walked me through Periscope. Since then, I’ve sold more than $30K of my Periscope Mastery course…and I give Jen all the credit. I would never had been able to show you how to use Periscope to successfully promote your business, gain more followers, create online influence, and more if she hadn’t been the first to give me the scoop! She knows her stuff inside and out. So, when Facebook turned me off, my next question to her was:

A colleague kept saying he wanted to connect me with a really cool guy who writes for the Huffington Post because he thought we’d love to collaborate. We never got around to it on US soil, but…

As phenomenal as the universe works, all three of us were in Aruba at the same time for a variety of different reasons, and David and I finally had the opportunity to connect. My friend was right…we instantly meshed, our purposes were aligned, and we’ve been collaborating every since.

So, why do YOU need to know how to hire the right person?

No matter what size your business, you’ll need to hire at some point. It’s better to do it the right way than the wrong way…save yourself the trouble. I’m not sure why, but most entrepreneurs never think to educate themselves on hiring before we do it. There is actual skill involved to getting awesome people aligned and working efficiently on your team.

You might be thinking…

Not me. I’m SOLO! I don’t need to know how to hire the right person….

BALDERDASH! Even if you’re a die-hard solo-preneur, unless you are proficient in everything from bookkeeping to graphic design (and are crazy enough to think you can do the best job all on your own), you’ll need to hire or outsource someone to help you get the jobs done, done right, and done great. It’s also the only way to expand a business effectively and have your business working for you instead of you being a slave to your business. Unless you’re the type of guy or gal who wants to work 20 hours a day only to never see your business grow…and I don’t think that’s you. Knowing how to hire is as essential as knowing how to pay your taxes.

David’s advice will help you weed through the forest of applicants, know what to ask, how to ask it, and how to know if someone is going to help you forward your business or just waste your time and/or resources (been there…done that!).
